Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to treat a variety of ailments for several thousand years. Both TCM and a particular component of TCM, Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCA), have been growing in popularity in the west for the past few decades and although the efficacy of acupuncture remains controversial the treatments` appeal would appear to be gathering pace. TCA is a medical practice that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points around the body, the choice of points is guided by an assessment of the patients inner dis-harmony gained during a consultation and the treatment is aimed at adjusting the flow of Qi or the body’s natural energy to bring harmonisation and there by restore health. An individual acupuncture point can address a number of issues and a combination of points are used to focus the treatment on the particular needs of that patient at that time, these needs often change during a course of treatments so the choice of needle combinations (prescriptions) can change from treatment to treatment.
